Our story
Our philosophy is to develop a long-term strategy that allows you to use funds from hard dollar savings to implement programs that generate long-term positive results.
Our team brings vast knowledge from both healthcare benefits and pharmacy. We saw that businesses weren’t always being treated fairly, and in some cases, quality of care was given up for cost. We knew there was a better way.
With a team of healthcare benefits experts, we set out to work with and through brokers to help employers save money without sacrificing that quality of care.

Our People
Michael A. Espenlaub
Michael is a co-owner and principal of Veracity Benefits. Michael and his partners at Veracity created the firm with a goal of helping employers save money on their medical spend without reducing quality of care. Michael brought with him over 30 years of vast insurance background including individual insurance sales and employer group brokerage. He is knowledgeable in all aspects of the business but excels in finding innovative solutions and “connecting the dots” to help employers with various aspects of their health plans. His solutions include innovations in pharmacy plans, finding best in class vendors for compliant bill review, telemedicine, and payment methodologies.
Marilynn E. “Pepper” Schafer
Principal
Pepper Schafer is a co-owner and principal of Veracity Benefits. Pepper began her career with the Prudential Insurance Company in group insurance sales in Houston. After rising to VP of Marketing, she moved to Atlanta as CEO of the Georgia HMO operations for Prudential. In 1997, she left and started her own TPA, primarily doing provider consulting and capitation administration. In 2006, the company migrated into employee benefits with the development of its proprietary network. Pepper sold her TPA to HealthSCOPE Benefits in 2016 and then left HealthSCOPE in 2019 upon their sales to UHC. At that point, she and her partners formed Veracity Benefits, a company that is dedicated to working with and through brokers to help self-funded employers save money without sacrificing quality of care.
Danny A. Toth, R.Ph.
Danny A. Toth, R.Ph. joined Veracity as a partner on January 1, 2020. He manages the pharmacy solutions offered by Veracity and is President of VeracityRX. Danny is a graduate of Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy. Throughout his career, Danny has been the head of a hospital pharmacy, owner of his own pharmacy, president of 2 PBMs, a pharmacy systems consultant, and the founder and owner of Timber Ridge Consultants – a firm featured in Dr. Marty Makary’s book, “The Price We Pay.” He is an award-winning and nationally recognized expert in innovative and customer-focused solutions to reducing pharmacy costs for employers.
